These are editorial planning bands, not ASTM temperature ratings. ASTM F3340 standardises how thermal resistance is measured; it does not assign outdoor temperature limits.
What R-value actually measures
R-value describes resistance to heat transfer through the pad. A higher number means more resistance. ASTM F3340-22 creates a repeatable comparison by compressing a camping mattress between controlled hot and cold plates.
It does not recreate every field condition. Edge losses, exposed body area, posture, inflation, moisture, wind and the rest of your sleep system can change how warm you feel.
Why stacked R-values add
When two pads have comparable tested values, add them: an R 3.2 air pad plus an R 2.0 foam pad gives a combined planning value of R 5.2.
A foam pad also adds puncture protection and redundancy. Mark unverified values honestly—the arithmetic can be exact while the underlying claim remains uncertain.

Methodology and limitations
The selector starts with broad, conservative planning bands, then adds visible 0.5 margins for cold/unknown sleeper profiles, frozen/snow or unknown surfaces, and uncertain forecasts. These margins are editorial decision aids—not part of ASTM F3340.
The planning model is adult-only and versioned. It does not diagnose cold sensitivity, replace local forecasts, or guarantee comfort or safety. Severe conditions require redundancy, field experience and route-specific advice.
